Depending on the material you choose, the reason behind your gutter replacement needs may be very different.  While stronger materials may be able to be repaired, it may be more beneficial to replace the entire system.

• Painted aluminum gutters: Aluminum gutters are known for being lightweight and won't bend like vinyl would, but they can dent very easily.  Fluctuating temperatures can cause it to expand and contract.  They also tend to corrode with age, and the outer coating can sometimes chip or fade
  
• Polished copper gutters: The rust resistance and light durability make copper an extremely attractive option, but tend to be more difficult to install compared to other materials
  
• Steel gutters: Steel gutters are layered with protective zinc, which with age can wear off, leaving the gutters susceptible to rust if they aren't properly maintained.  Also, without professional maintenance, zinc wear can be difficult to see, so rust can go unnoticed for long periods of time.  Steel is also heavy, and thus difficult to install, but is worth the durability if that is what you are looking for

• Sagging gutters: Sagging or drooping gutters may indicate that that they are succumbing to the weight. If water is collecting inside the gutters (instead of draining), your gutters may have a clog or a slight breakage.
• Cracks and splits: Small cracks can form with time, and small leaks can grow into major ones, potentially damaging your facial board, siding, or windows
• Peeling paint and discoloration: Paint fading or flaking could indicate a water flow issue. Orange coloring could be signs of rust, which could be a sign that water has begun to pool and collect inside it
• Water marks beneath gutters: Water marks or other damage on the under side of the gutter could indicate that you will need to get your gutter replaced.
• Pooling water and mildew: Mildew or polling near the foundation is a severe sign of poor drainage or possible split and fractures
